Discover more of the sacred day of Tumpek Landep and how Tanah Gajah celebrates the occasion.
Balinese have been busy preparing for a ceremonial day named ‘Tumpek Landep,’ a celebration to honor the god of weaponry: Sang Hyang Pasupati. Tumpek Landep is celebrated every 210 days and it coincidentally falls on the same day as the anniversary of Tanah Gajah’s very own temple. Therefore Tumpek Landep at Tanah Gajah has always been celebrated with larger ceremonies.
Weapons for Balinese are often passed down through generations and carry the family’s mystical power. On special days such as Tumpek Landep, they are taken out to be purified so that they are ready to use.
At Tanah Gajah, a couple of days prior to the big ceremony, all of our staff gather to decorate shrines and statues around the property and to pay respect for the sacred objects. On Tumpek Landep day, all employees visit the resort’s temple with their family members, bringing offerings which they have prepared at home. In the morning, a purification ceremony is held to ward off bad spirits that linger within the resort and finally the Hindu priest will lead a Tumpek Landep prayer at the temple grounds.
Resort guests are free to join the ceremony, should they like to immerse themselves in the Balinese culture and experience a deeper connection with its traditions.
