An Artistic and Luxurious Resort in Ubud

Hidden among the lush undulating hills of Bali’s culture-rich highlands, Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana sits among thriving rice fields as far as the eye can see. Just outside the artists’ village of Ubud, the former estate of Hendra Hadiprana – one of Indonesia’s most respected art collectors – has been transformed into an intimate luxury resort with twenty four individual villas, each featuring unique and original Balinese artworks from his collection.

The Best Place to Stay in Bali

Our luxurious, yet rustic, six-hectare hotel in Ubud offers an authentic backdrop to one of Bali’s most dramatic performances, the Kecak dance, performed at the resort’s very own ampitheatre. Those seeking serenity and rejuvenation will find both in abundance at The Spa-nestled at the edge of the seemingly endless paddy fields. Experience breathtaking sunrises over the captivating Mount Agung – Bali’s highest and holiest mountain – and enjoy a leisurely stroll by the estate’s lotus pond, home to a family of white Dutch and black Australian swans.

Tanah Gajah Ubud is proud to host a dance troupe of between fifty and seventy boys and men from the local community who perform the Kecak dance.

Sustainability at Tanah Gajah Ubud

At Tanah Gajah Ubud, sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations. We are committed to preserving Bali's natural environment, supporting local communities, and celebrating cultural heritage while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our guests and team members. Our sustainability approach is built on four interconnected pillars: Environmental Stewardship, Social Responsibility, Economic Empowerment, and Health & Safety.

Environmental Stewardship

Our commitment to environmental preservation begins with thoughtful land use. Across our six-hectare property, we have intentionally limited development to just 24 individual suites and villas, dedicating the majority of our land to gardens and working rice paddies. This low-density approach provides guests with expansive space to explore and connect with nature while minimizing our environmental footprint. Our mature gardens and rice fields create a thriving ecosystem that serves as habitat for diverse wildlife, including native bird species, squirrels, and other fauna. This biodiversity-rich environment offers guests the opportunity to experience Bali's natural beauty in its most authentic form while contributing to species conservation and ecological balance. We have implemented comprehensive environmentally responsible practices throughout our operations. Single-use plastics have been replaced with plant-based alternatives, including straws crafted from rice paddy remnants, and in-room amenities are provided in refillable containers. Our water management system captures and reuses irrigation water to maintain our gardens, reducing our overall water consumption. We have embraced digital technology to minimize our environmental footprint. Upon check-in, we create dedicated WhatsApp groups for seamless guest communication, significantly reducing paper usage while enhancing personalized service. This digitalization extends across our operations, from menus to guest information, supporting our commitment to a more sustainable future.

Social Responsibility

Preserving and celebrating Balinese culture is central to our mission. We offer guided rice paddy treks where guests learn about traditional rice cultivation methods and connect with local artisans. Our resort proudly serves as a venue for the renowned Kecak & Fire Dance, providing neighboring village performers with a platform to practice and preserve this sacred Balinese tradition. We actively support local farmers by allowing them to cultivate rice fields on our property, sharing half of each harvest with them. This partnership sustains traditional agricultural practices while providing direct economic benefit to farming families. Our community engagement extends beyond our property boundaries. Each year on our anniversary, we donate essential supplies to local schools and senior citizens, strengthening our bonds with the surrounding community and contributing to their wellbeing.

Economic Empowerment

The Tempayan, our all-day dining restaurant, champions local economic development through strategic partnerships with regional suppliers. We prioritize locally sourced ingredients that follow Bali's natural seasonal cycles, reducing food miles while ensuring the freshest produce for our guests. These collaborations create sustainable income streams for local farmers, fishermen, and artisans, keeping economic benefits within the community. By choosing local suppliers and celebrating Balinese ingredients, we support the regional economy while offering our guests an authentic taste of Bali.

Health & Safety

The wellbeing of our guests, staff, and community is paramount. We maintain comprehensive safety systems throughout the property, including clear safety signage in multiple languages, emergency evacuation plans, and regularly inspected safety equipment in all guest accommodations. Our team members are provided with appropriate personal protective equipment and receive ongoing training in safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and responsible workplace practices. We conduct regular safety audits and continuously update our procedures to meet international standards. Fire safety equipment, first aid stations, and emergency contact information are strategically positioned throughout the resort, ensuring rapid response capability in any situation. We are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for both our team members and guests. Tanah Gajah maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward bullying, discrimination, and harassment of any kind. All staff receive training on respectful workplace conduct and guests' rights to dignity and respect. We have clear reporting mechanisms in place, and all complaints are treated seriously, investigated promptly, and handled with confidentiality. Our commitment to respect extends to ensuring that every person—regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or disability—feels safe, valued, and welcomed at our resort.
